Rachel & Preston's Buffalo Peak Engagements happened at just the right time. I have often talked about knowing the right time to do a photoshoot. Not just the right time of day but the day of the year to get what your clients are looking for. Rachel wanted wildflowers, and mountain views, and that's what I was going to give her.
There is a 3 week period of time where the wildflowers are in bloom at there fullest on the top of buffalo peak in Provo Canyon, and it varies a lot from year to year. So the only way to know if there are flowers up there is to do the 1 hour+ drive ahead of time. So that's what I did. I drove up a few days before to the area where the flowers look the best around the time I expected flowers to be there, and there they were!
The road up to Buffalo Peak is not for regular cars. I have seen small cars trying to make it, but I would not recommend it. For any of my clients that don't have a suv or truck, I have them park at the lower parking lot area and I drive them up in my truck. It would not be good to get a flat tire on the way to a photoshoot, as we always are short an time.
I usually have 3 to 5 places I shoot up the canyon with the end point being Buffalo peak. There is the parking lot lower area, Smith Ditch Hill just after the lower area, the middle area off a trail path, Buffalo Peak at the top, and then Rock Canyon Overlook if we have time. All the areas are beautiful, especially in May or September, but Buffalo peak is the most beautiful. We usually only have time for 3 of the locations.
Rachel & Preston were great to work with and we did a lot of hiking around to get to the most scenic areas. And, we got some beautiful pictures in all the areas we went to.
